If I try and download any antivirus software (I've tried Avast, AVG, ZoneAlarm) it takes forever (over 4 hrs) and then I'll get a message saying Server has reset, download failed. Unfortunately I have a dial up connection so I expect it to be slow but not this bad! My ISP provider is Sky. I have 77GB free of memory

Try to download smaller antivirus.. On dial up connection, it's common to download application above 20mb such as antivirus for 3 or more hours. Try using free download manager or some download helper that support resume so that you can resume your download if some issues disturb your download :)
You need to upgrade to broadband...
