If the pilot go out on a furnace would gas continue to flow to the pilot , or would it shut off with in a few seconds
T was using a shop vac in the furnace room and the force of the air extinguish the pilot light at that time I began to hear a hissing sound coming from the pilot valve for 5 to 10 seconds I got worried and turn off the valve I felt the gas to the pilot light opening should shut off close to immediate when the pilot light is extinguished.

The pilot flame heats a thermocouple, so if the pilot goes out, the thermocouple cools and shuts off the gas. It can take anywhere from 20 seconds to 2 minutes for it to shut off. You should hear an audible click when it happens.
