If the stem part does not come out of the valve assembly after removing the handle - what did i miss thats holding it on? I want to change the tub surround and i need to remove the part of the stem the handle screws onto and the flashing for the handle assembly in order to put the new tub surround in place. The insides of the gizmo appear to be white plastic so i dont think its ancient even though it may be old
There is a fork shaped clip retainer which prevents the valve assembly from popping out, on purpose or accidently.
Even when you remove the fork, you may find it difficult to remove. You should pull it straight out toward you, perhaps using a large channel lock pliers to hold on to the metal center shaft which hold the handle screw. In the past I have found sometimes, very difficult, due to mineral buildup in the cylinder. Having to tap it out - tpping on the plieers.
