I had same symptoms also backfiring and missing to the point of causing sparks out the exhaust. After 180,000 miles the bearing in the distributor came apart causing misfiring. My distributor contains the ignition module and the coil and a sensor. NS40 or NS45 is the part number of the distributor, check the casting numbers. It took me forever to fiqure out, I read many similar reports but no one ever followed up with the fix !
Check the 2 wire connector to the ignition module. It may come loose causing intermittent ignition shutdown. replace and tie down connector to prevent vibration.
