Incorrect record speed
I sent my PMD101 to a Marantz expert for service. He changed the rubber rings and toatally screwed up the machine. I was so upset I put it away and never looked at the machine again.
If one of your experts is local to me(HA5 4DU in UK), I would like to bring it to you to recaliberate or change the rubbers so that it records and plays back at the right speed. This was used by my music teacher wife who used it extensively for her students. Since its demise we use a cheap £25.00 Sony cassette recorder. We have gone through 3 machines so far.

Do you have a reel to reel deck or another machine? You may also need a schematic. Make a copy of about 2 minutes of a tape on a working machine. Keep the original in the working machine. Each cassette deck needs a different size belt. Try putting different size rubber bands on it. Cassettes usually play at 1 7/8 IPS (inches per second) each speed increases or decreases by doubling or dividing by 2.
