Installed XP (clean) and now no sound. The drivers aren't installed, and it shows up as ''audio device'' with a big ? in the device manager, but the drivers are nowhere to be found, even in Windows Update.

Windows does not carry all device drivers. Go to the laptop manufactures website click support and then drivers find your model and download the correct driver for your system. Not all manufactures share drivers with Microsoft this has always been an issue. You should have received a driver resource CD when you bought it new. If you still have that cd all your drivers will also be on that not your operating cd.
ok if the drivers above are no use then the card you have in your pc is a soundblaster 16 pro. This is a creative labs company brand. You may be able to refine your search with this information.
