installer has now gone out of business. Is the fault fixable and will the cistern be covered by a Villeroy & Boch gaurantee? Would be very grateful for advice. Geoff

Your chain is probably metal that snags under the flap (verify by taking top off tank and looking) and you should switch to a plastic chain.
Easy just replace the flap that stops the water after handle is down and toilet flushes and also replace the chain that connects from handle to rubber flap. New chain should be plastic one so it can be reattached and problem is fixed. Should cost less then 5 bucks from Home Depot or Lowes. They can happily step you through the process. I should take about 2 minutes to install ...if that.
Remember to remove excess links of plastic chain with a pair of scissors. Its doesn't require a rocket scientist.
