Instrument Cluster needles stuck -- Electrical Problems
Was running well until one month after his warranty expired. After finishing up a long ride, bike shuts off...cannot restart, dead battery. Battery is replaced, bike fires up, no worries...That battery draws down, no start...indicates original battery maybe not bad, probably a charging problem. Local Ducati Mechanic replaces rectifier/regulator...original battery charged up and installed, bike runs fine. (spare battery now sits in garage) Couple of days later, son on bike on nice ride, about 45 mins in to the ride bike shuts off while at about 60 mph, 4000 rpm...instrument cluster freezes in that position... He pulls over and he hears whistling from under tank...lifts fuel tank, battery is extremely hot and is the source of the sound, he removes battery and places it away from bike... Bike recovered to house by truck. Would seem that battery was being over charged. Complicating troubleshooting is now, with another battery installed, instrument cluster will not reset, needles are stuck at 4000rpm and ~60mph. Could not reset with Red Key using the immobilizer reset process. BTW, found a pinched and grounded tail-light wire where the seat post pinched it into the locking mechanism bearing the wire. Any ideas on how to get the instrument cluster to reset? Ideas from there? Thanks,

Needles stuck indicative of instrument cluster complete failure. Cause unknown. This is second instrument cluster that has failed on this bike, first one failed at about 3000 miles, twenty-two months ago. This "new" one died in mid May 2008. Received word from Ducati North America that they will accept the warranty claim for the toasted instrument cluster!!! Am still concerned about cause...this is second instrument cluster for this S2R800. Seems to be an issue prevalent on some of these late model Monsters. Will update more after instrument cluster gets in and replaced by Bloodworth Ducati in Nashville.
