Iomega HDD80 GB external drive isn't recognized by new computer
Just set up new Dell running Vista x64 and my Iomega HDD80 external drive (about 4 years old or so) isn't even picked up as a new drive or "seen" by the computer. Is there a remedy for this?

The drive is simply not supported by Vista -- and Iomega does not support Vista with that drive.

Sorry for the bad news. You can buy a 1tb external hard drive for well under $150 shipped, and get some 12 times the space. A friend with XP can help you move your files over, or you can download something like Knoppix, a bootable CD, which should allow you to mount the new and the old drives and copy files over.
For what it's worth -- that hard drive has some of the worst reviews I've ever seen on Amazon. It's just painful. You have to move on.
Some additional routines for trying to get unsupported drives working are here:

I don't know how much time this is worth to you.
Some drives simply do not support Vista.
Yours is one of them. There is nothing you can do to change that.

If the new computer can detect a different USB devices, so the problem here is the external drive that you have, you can try first to use a different USB cable because sometimes its just a problem with the cable....
Hi and welcome to FixYa,
- plug in any other external storage device to the Dell such as a flash/thumbdrive, digital camera, eternal memory card reader and the likes; and/or
- try the Iomega in another PC.
Should it be determined that that Iomega works in another PC, then the Dell would require attention. Perhaps an update would be needed; If on the other the Iomega would also not work, then it is highly probable that the internal 80Gb hard disk of the Iomega would need attention/checking/replacement.
Initially, it has to be determined whether the USB port of the new Dell running Vista or Iomega HDD80 is the issue. Pls try:

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Hello Editart,
1- make sure your USB (if this is how you are connecting it) is working. You can try to plug other devices on that port to check if it works.
2- If it does conect your external harddrive and right-click on "My Computer". Then select manage devices. See if your harddrive appears in that list (also make sure to check the "?" list).
Good luck and let me know what you found so far to continue helping you.

Connect it as a secondry drive and checkout.
Did you tried it on a different computer?
Place you hand on the HDD and chk if you feel the drive spinning.
If no the Hdd id dead.
If yes go to my computer and check for the drive there.
Install the software if any that came with the HDD.
Try some other USB device and check whether that is detected
If no reinstall the chipset driver.
Let me know if you need further assistance...Kevin.
did you check the omega website for latest vista driver. i think you should you should try that.
