Get a Griffin Firewire charge converter( 3031-FWUSB) or simular product.. original ipod nanos used 12v firewire connection to charge( Yes even though you were using a usb cable to charge it.. docks were also wired this way to charge units) the newer ipods use usb 5v to charge so you need to get an adapter like the above mentioned to continue using the older dock and still have it charge the newer ipods.
It does that to my iPhone; if I want to charge I have to use a separate cable and run the audio into the aux. Defeats the whole purpose of a dock if you ask me, but I guess they never anticipated what they'd have to do to charge the new iPhone batteries back when they designed the pre-G3-phone docks.
