Is a cracked windshield to dangerous to leave unrepaired ?
My 2006 toyota matrix has a 2.5 foot horizontal crack about 4 inches above the bottom edge of the glass. The crack has turned down to the bottom edge to the glass on both ends about a 1.5 feet from the side edges. I don't think it will expand anymore and it doesn't block the view at all so my main concern is risk of a substanially weakened windshield or of shattering. It would cost $300 dollars to replace it.
Do I need to repair/replace it for safety reasons?
Is there a cheaper option to repair a long crack like this?

Just leave it. A windshield is made of 2 pieces of glass with a plastic laminate layer in between the glass. The plastic laminate is what keeps you in the car in an accident. the crack is in the outside layer.
don't worry about it. It is not tempered glass and will not shatter like side and back glass.
