Never take a chance with any type of appliance burning any type fuel, if you are not 100 percent trained or educated on the install, have only a licensed technician do the job, they will not intentionally install a dangerous product. I agree with yooper. Because the Rinnai is a direct vent appliance, If you do not vent it it could re-burn products of combustion (CO2) and make Carbon Monoxide very rapidly (CO). Have you considered solar?
A flue is necessary on all gas fired appliances to ex spell all byproducts of combustion outside living areas. Byproducts of combustion are odorless and can be deadly.
