I don't know these particular vehicles,and I know I am somewhat retro in period, but one way that the front part of 4WD was switched off or by-passed in the past, was via front free-wheeling hubs. They at least isolate the front wheels from the front axles and differential, which even that is a significant energy saving..
Hi,,If it's to just go only 2 X 4 & if it's the same way then a 2001 Dakota... you unbolt the front drive-shaft & unplug the transfertcase,,If it's the same system,,it's now working 2 X 4 rear.
