is running through it. The heating module on the left side is hot, one on the right is cold. Hot water coming out of faucet is warm and then cold. What is problem? What do I need to replace?

You are going to have to replace the heating element on the right side. That noise was probably the heating element going bad and arcing. Joe
Not completly sure about this but these thing use anything up to 7kw of power so check the suppy wires first to make sure the ends are not burnt out ,if ok then a new heater coil is the next thing to look at
if the electric tails are ok then it could be cheaper to renew rather than try to repair or renew the elements
