It appears to be over heating and goes down after 30 minutes or so and then we have to turn it off and on again as it loses the connection to our wireless computers in the house. Doesn't happen to the desktop it is directly connected to, just our laptops...??

You can run into that problem if the router is from verizon or whoever and you are using it with another dsl provider. contact your provider about how to set up. or update firmware.
