The Subwoofer works when the speaker is pushed in by hand but when you let the sub go it works for about 5 seconds and quits again until you push it back in.

Happened to me, i also had a metallic/iron smell coming from my sub... i pronounced it dead. had to buy a new one and it worked fine... if you believe its not dead then your amp is not getting enough power and most likely shutting off (protection mode), you can try buying a cap, farad 2 or better will work and is suggested for larger subs anyways
