Just replaced the capacitor,started the pump, water running in the skimmer, checked to be sure the shaft was turning freely and it is, then smoke was coming out the back! I have made sure the impeller was clear of all debri as well...HELP

Sounds like you may have a failed start switch in the motor. It appears the start winding did not drop out and the pump would not come up to full speed.
