Lexmark X1270 All In One Printer not printing
A friend gave me an old printer which he does not use any more. After getting cables and then drivers from manufacturers website I tried installing the printer to my PC but at the print test page stage the printer goes through the motions but nothing is being printed on paper. I am using windows xp and can confirm printer is being detected and set as default printer. There is ink being detected in catridges by printer allthough I am unsure to the age of these. How do I determine if it is the printhead needing replacement?.

A word of warning here. You can not simply wipe the head with paper, cloth or any other object as this will cause debris and minute fragments or cloth or paper to block the micro-pores of the print head.
You can lay the cartridge head on paper with an alcohol soaked pad to see if the clog dissolves, water tends to degrade the connections on the electronic side as it flows upwards from the head due to the capillary effect.
And finally, my question is, have you completely removed the protective film covering your new cartridge?
I am assuming the cartridges are new because the PC indicates that they are full, and you didn't say that you refilled them.
Put that together with the fact that your friend gave up on the printer, and most likely replaced the ink cartridges in an attempt to solve his own problem and the solution may just be as simple as a little strip of plastic.
Hi, You have clearly mentioned everything in your post. The printer is working fine however you are not able to print any text. As the printer is old and it might be that it was not being used for a long time. Once we install any printer on computer, it is likely to detect whole lot of ink, but actually it is not. You can take out the cartridges from the printer and try to put a tissue paper beneath the cartridge's ink tank head. See if ink is getting sucked out or not. Try to check check that all colors are there on the tissue paper. Do the same thing with black cartridge as well. If the test result is negative, it means that cartridges are all dried up and need replacement.
But before replacing the print cartridges, try a few tricks as well. Try to dip the cartridge's head in luke warm water (meaning only lower area where print head is located) and leave it for 5-10 minutes. Take out the tank and wipe off any water using tissue paper. You will see that splurge of ink on the paper. You can connect the tank to the printer and check with the print. If all goes well, there is nothing more to save some money. I am providing you a link as well that will tell you how to refill an ink cartridge as well. http://www.essortment.com/articles/refill-lexmark-x1270-color-ink_102757.htm
Hope everything goes well.
Cheers!
If the printer has not been used for a while the catridges my have dried ink on them. Sometimes you can get them to work if you touch an alcohol wipe to the cartridge where the ink comes out. note: only touch the wipe to the cartridge for a second or two each time. I would try this for about 3 or 4 times to see if the ink will come out. Put the cartridge back in after each try to see if it works. The other option is to replace the cartridges.
