Light blinking from Blue to Red
Same problem as another poster. Was working one day and down the next. Faint clicking sound with the light switching from blue to red. Computer doesn't recognize it but it doesn't really seem to power up in the first place in order for that to even happen. Help!
Computers & Internet - Fantom - Drives 120 GB Hard Drive

External drives with IDE drives get very hot because there is no fan in them usually. I recommend leaving it off unless you are using it. I have had hard drives crash on several very expensive ones...and they are usually only warranteed for a year.
Yes to answer your question it can be pricey as in up to about $1000.

Do some shopping, google data recovery crash or something similar you may find it for a couple hundred.
I also have a fantom drive 250 GB and the led also flickers from red to blue. I took out the drive and installed it on a computer as a slave and I was able to access the files though DOS. The only difference is that mine was not clicking and that is a big difference. In conclusion the flickering only detects failure. Disk recovery is very expensive and there are tricks on the net that you can Google and try. I have not tried them, so I can't share the experience. I can't believe these things do not have fans, or at lease a warning letting consumers know that they should not be kept on for long periods of time.
