Ix months ago the DVD writer in my HP pavilion 754n desktop pc died and was
replaced under warranty (now expired) with the LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1693S. Up
until yesterday it worked fine. Now my pc recognizes it as a CDRom/RW but
not as a DVD ROM or RW. When I put a blank DVD in it, I get an error message
that there is no DVD writer detected. Putting a commercial DVD results in
the error message: no DVD player detected. It will read and write to CD's.
It shows up correctly in my device manager but in My Computer it is labeled
"CD Drive."

I've gone to LITE-ON's web page to obtain a driver download but though there
is a page purportedly providing a dowload for the driver for this unit,
there are no links on the page. I disabled my firewall but still no links.

My basic question: Is this a driver issue, a hardware failure or something
else?
