I am not sure how you know that your computer does not recognize your mic, but you can try to check your volume control settings and make sure you have your mic unmuted and at good levels.
Are you using Vista? Sound configuration in vista seems different, as I had problem making my Realtek work with it, too. The microphone is not a digital device, therefore it does not show on the device list. Your computer will recognize only the device that your mic is connecting to, that is, your realtek sound card. Thus, you will touch only the settings in the sound card (Mic level, not muted, if necessary, switch on Mic boost, which is found under the advanced configuration on the volume control.
