Check your rotor cap and make sure your coil wire is attached if it's an older car. If you smell fuel take it to a pep boys. Bad wiring is usually the culprit. You can replace your rotor and cap easily. Just make sure you hold the new cap by the old one and replace the wires one at a time in clockwise order. The rotor is inside the cap and when you have it off you'll see the thing that looks like a thick watch hand.

Run fault codes .check cam/crank shaft position sensors. Check that the cam shaft is turning (broken timing belt/chain). Check immobiliser operation
