I have a Lynx BBQ36FR barbeque, (2001), with manual igniters. Both of the two rotary igniters are producing very weak sparks, which are not enough to light the gas. The spark gaps on the electrodes are adjusted OK. I pulled out the panel holding the igniters and checked the spark to ground right at the output of the igniters, (bypassing the electrodes altogether), but the spark there is still very weak. The igniters are the rotary knob type with “dual” outputs to each control two separate electrodes. Both outputs on each igniter have the weak spark problem. However, I noticed that if I create a spark gap between the two electrodes on an igniter, (not the normal operational mode, of course), I get a very strong spark. This same phenomenon occurs on both of the rotary igniters on the grill, i.e. weak spark to ground on each of the two outputs on each of the two igniters but very strong spark between the two outputs on either of the two igniters. My conclusion is that that the ground connection between the igniters and the metal plate they are mounted on is very poor, thus creating a very high resistance for the spark generation to from output to the plate, (ground). I can explain the strong spark between the two outputs as being because the internal ground between the two generators in the igniter is OK, it’s just the connection of this common ground to the mounting plate that is bad. Thus, in effect, the two piezo generators are connected in series via the internal common ground and thus create the very large spark between the two outputs. I’ve not yet checked out the ground connection to the plate but I’ll be doing this todayPhew! Now to my question: Anybody had the same problem/symptoms? How is the igniter grounded to the plate? I assume it is through the mounting screws or the spindle but I’ve not had a good look yet.ThanksDave
