I had the same problem and this is what I did.
Problem:
Working for 1.5 years and suddenly quit. Computer did not recognize the hardrive.
Code 10 trying to mount harddrive.
My hard-drive did not make any noise, just a silent click.......click....
Condition:
This worked for me under the situation that:
I used this external drive on my desktop.
I have an available slave connector and power.
I know enough about the inside of my desktop to install a slave drive.
Solution:
Removed the drive from the box, and attach to computer Desktop as slave.
1) There are some slider latches on either lenth wise sides. Once disengaged top should come right off. Or just crack it open.
2) Once opened remove screws from metal Cage, and remove top of cage.
3) Remove three screws holding the USB adapter card. (All visible screws) Not the ones on the actual hard drive.
3) Carefull remove harddrive and the attached usb adapter card in one piece.
4) Remove the USB adapter card from hard drive.
5) Turn off computer to be installed, and unplug. Install drive direct, as slave. No jumpers to move since the drive is already set to slave.
6) Plug computer to test and if it is read and mounted, your ready to go.
7) turn off computer, and unplug. arrange cables in desktop case.
9) Close up the service panel and plug your computer back up.
I need to be sure before sending it in for recovery and spending $800. So I connected as slave to 2nd desktop computer and it mounted. This means that the "USB adapter card" that came with the maxtor3200 was faulty. It was recommended that the best way to back up on another harddrive is to directly plug your harddrive into your computer as slave.
Good Luck!

I had the same problem many here have had...
Dell 8300 running XP SP3
Solid light on the hard drive and on the power adapter and a faint clicking noise in the drive.
Windows would see the drive when plugged in but then after about 30 sec it would say that there was a problem and the divice may not work.
Device manager gave the code 10 error.
I broke the plastic shell off the drive, removed the drive from the wire cage, removed the USB card and installed the drive internally in my tower. Booted up and bingo!
I got 40 gigs of music and pictures back!
Thanks for the help.
Hi, I had the same problem, "code 10 error, device failed to start". Low buzzing sound and hard drive heating up more than usual.
Took it down to a local repair place where they took the case off and tried to plug it directly into the internal power yokey in a desktop tower.. same response. They concluded that the motor inside was seized and referred me to a data recovery specialist who said it would cost at least €700 to repair.
So then I took it home, moderately p***ed off, figured i had nothing to lose so i plugged it in to the power and just shook it! I shook it semi-violently in a kind of clockwise and anticlockwise rotation kind of way for about 10 seconds. Then i heard the low buzzing sound speed up and become a healthy working hard drive sound!
I guess it kind of push started the motor or dislodged something that was stuck, either way I'm very relieved.
So, if you've tried everything else and your about to shell out big bucks for data recovery, try shaking the bejeezus out of it! It's not a very sophisticated solution but it's cheap!

I was searching for a fix to my MAXTOR ERRROR CODE 10 when I found this string and followed the advice for a fix.
I tried connecting the external drive to another machine with service pack 2 - no luck.
HOWEVER, upon removing the drive from it's original casing and installing it as a "slave" in my CPU - VOILA, it worked like a charm.
After rebooting the machince, the drive even showed up as "Maxtor external J ", which retained the alpha code that I had assigned to it in it's early days.
My "computer geek" agrees that it likely the USB connection in the original unit that is creating the problem..
DO NOT send your Maxtor drive out for any expensive repairs or service. All my data was still on the drive is DEFINITELY in tact.
It's a relatively simplty operation to remove the drive from its casing and install it in your CPU. Beg, borrow and get help from a knowledgable friend.
The entire job took about half an hour.
Following some of the advice further down in this forum i can confirm that changing the casing works. the power supply on the maxtor must be dodgy. I took out the actual HD and put it into another case and it now works perfectly. Took about 5 minutes
I have a maxtore 3200. never got an error message, just stopped working.
my $20 solution. Go to MicroCenter, buy an eide housing. CAREFULLY open the housing and remove the hard drive, which is safely inside a metal frame. Hook the drive to the internal controls, plug it into your PC - takes about 5 minutes- and you are good to go with all data intact.
good luck!
Have do I get another power pack for my Maxtor hard drive External. And how much will it cost, Whats your Opion.
Had the same problem...drive would not start...took unit apart..removed the 3 screws holding circuit board out and removed hard drive and circuit board as one. removed power suppy plug from hard drive( 4 wire plug), took side cover off of desktop computer ..found a similar power supply plug and plugged it into maxtor drive unit...reconnected maxtor power plug and when i reconnected the USB cord to Maxtor and Desktop...IT POWERED UP
Code 10 is described by the help desk at Maxtor and the Geek Squad as a catastrophic failure that will take $100s if not $1000s of dollars to recover your date. Don’t buy it! Or at least until you check and see if your Maxtor 3200 external hard is trying to run on Windows XP with service pack 3. IT WILL NOT WORK. However, when I was able to go back to service pack 2, the drive that was supposed to be dead, worked just fine. In my opinion, find a computer that does not have service pack 3, get your data, and throw that junk Maxtor drive in the trash. Also, be very careful if you are trying to remove service pack 3 from your machine. That can cause allot more problems like you needing to reload Windows from scratch. Yeah! It happened to me but I did recover my data from a DEAD DRIVE with an error code 10.

YOUR MOXTOR 3200 drive is alive and well. Don't believe the style="display:none;">YOUR MOXTOR 3200 drive is alive and well. Don't believe the data recovery folks. I have seen two issues with this drive throwing a "Code10" which is supposed to mean death and $1000s of dollars.
It means either you upgraded to service pack 3 or the power supply on the drive in failing. Both can be solved by the solutions provided already
I got the code 10 error problem when connecting the hard drive to 2 different computers. The green light is on, but the disk is not spinning nor is it recognized by the system.
I am getting the exact same error code and the solution was change the power supply and now I have back all my files and the maxtor its working again.
I had the same problem all of you had and I had just updated to XP Service Pack 3. I took the Maxton to another non-updated machine and it works wonderfully. I also took another Maxton 3200 (my back-up drive) and tried it on the updated XP machine and it also failed...... I do not think it is the Maxtor drives. I think it is something in Windows XP. Find an un-updated machine and try it before you give up on it.
Same problem here. Once I unplug, then replug, I get nothing. my entire company files are on this hard drive - I'll never buy Maxtor again.
The error code on maxtor's site says to open up a claim to get a new drive. Mine the green light is solid and the drive will not "spin up" like it use to. I am wondering if its a bad drive, power supply in the case, or something else. I want to know before sending it to data recovery.
