Maxtor External Hard Drive Unrecognizable, Makes Beeping, Grinding Sounds
Hello. You posted some very helpful information to a different forum and I am wondering if you might be able to help with my HD issue as well. My Maxtor external 250GB hard drive is suddenly not working. It makes a very loud beeping sound, followed by a grinding sound. I removed it from the enclosure, and tried it with 3 different computers. It is not detectable on any machine. I made some calls to companies that deal with data retrieval and it could cost in the thousands. :( I had no idea it would be so expensive to retrieve my data, though I am wondering if there is any hope to try different things before I resort to sending it off.
Please, if you have any suggestions, I would love to ehar them. Thank you in advance for your time.

I experienced this when I plugged it on a USB socket that has low power..
I laid mine upside down, and plugged it in and int went away..i think the usb HDD was in park mode....
This is literally a trademark Maxtor problem, I don't know one person who does not have this problem with their hard drives. My advice for next time is to get one from a different company; I know that sounds obvious but I'm just reminding you.
Not familiar with your hard drive specifically but in situations such as this it is generally a good idea to run a HDD checking program from the company that manufactured it over it to get a more specific idea of what the precise problem is.
I would download the Ultimate Boot CD
www.ultimatebootcd.com
It has a number of HDD diagnosis tools which also cover your Hard Drive. Scroll down about a screen on the above link and you'll see them listed. Once you have it, boot from the CD, select the correct diagnosis program and see what results you get.
As for other programs that might help, something like Spinrite might help however opinions on it are divided.

Data retrieval specialists are a huge waste of money. And when it may be some files that you want to be kept somewhat secret, I wouldn't use another person anyways. I can't help you on fixing the hard drive, however. Hope this helps.
