Memory loss I recently bought a maxtor basics external 500gb hd (aprox 2mths ago) it worked fine up to now when i plugged it in and turned on my laptop to clear some space from my internal drive. There was only 40 gig used on the maxtor and i was transfering another 35 gig when it was reported that there was not enough room to copy files. When i checked the maxtor it said that it was full 69 gig???? When tryed reformatting it would only format 70 gig not 500 . I am running a toshiba dual core with XP media centre edition
Check your warranty. Try to get them to replace it. WalMart will take anything back even if you didn't get it there. Just tell them that you did. That's happened to me before and there is no way to recover. If there were files on there that you can't find use www.recuva.com Other than that it's shot. Get a Western Digital MyBook. Better reliability. James Mac
It seems to me that when the drive was partitioned, the whole thing was not partitioned. If using Windows XP you can go under the Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management and then Disk Management. You should be able to see the drive and if any unpartitioned space is available.
