Mitac Laptop Model 8399. Turns on but nothing on screen
The hard drive has recently been formatted and XP Home reinstalled due to an 'Unrecoverable Error'. The laptop ran fine for 2 hours then suddenly showed a blue screen and switched off. I assumed that the unit had overheated so i opened it up, unblocked the fan and reassembled.
Now when the laptop is powered up the hard drive and cd drive start, but the fan doesnt run and the screen is blank. Then after a short time the unit turns off again.

Try re-setting your memory module(s). They are usually found in an underneath compartment held in by one screw.
Hi, yes. It is also called RAM. Not resetting but re-seating. You would have to try and re-seat it. It's under a cover plate that is underneath the laptop. When I say "re-seat" I basically mean remove the memory and place it back in. After you remove the cover plate, you will see 1 or 2 cards inserted into slots. These are the memory modules. You may only have 1. On each side of the modules, you will see a clip. If you press these clip away from the module, the module will release and the memory will pop up toward you. You should remove it and then snap it back in again. Push down so it will lock into place.
Also, when you say "shuts down" do you mean the laptop completely turns off or does the power light still stay lit ?
