Check your video drivers and the software that supports your video card. I recently did a complete OS reinstall and used the best and latest video drivers. My video card is an nVidia 8800GT. I downloaded and installed the latest software from nVidia. My display works great.
It isn't always a fault with the display. Sometimes you need to have the correct display drivers. A generic driver thqat is not the one you need could be a problem. Also, if you use the correct video sriver for your system, and you don't have the right software installed and configure for your video card, it can also be a problem.
To see is there is an obvious driver issue with your display in XP (I have XP), right-click on "My Computer." Select "Properties," then "Hardware." Select "Device Manager" and check the list to see of you have an exclamation point beside "Monitor" or "Sound, video, and game controllers."
If everything checks, and you can confirm that your drivers and applicable software are up to date, and settings are all good, it is not software or drivers.
