mower won't start. I have replaced the battery, spark plug and starter. When I turn the key it gives a rapid ticking sound. What should I try to do next?

Hi,
Check all battery cables are tight. You will need to check that you are getting 12.5 volts to the small terminal on the starter solenoid, if you are then the starter is not engaging properly into the flywheel, turn the engine over by hand 1/4 of a turn and try it again.
Also check that your earth lead to the motor is tight.
You may need to fit a auxcillary relay to the ignition start circut if there is too much voltage drop to the starter solenoid.

Ok, The rapid ticking sound you hear is it cominfg from the starter or a relay?
If it is coming from the starter motor then it will be the solenoid, and the solenoid will do this if it is not getting enough voltage to engage the second part of the starter motor. A bit like when the battery is flat
Check that voltage 12.5V at least is getting to the bottom solenoid cable.
If it is not coming from the solenoid then it will be a relay.
Check that your seat safety switch is ok and that the wires going to it have not rubbed through and shorting out on the body.

All starters have a solenoid, which should have 2-3 wires connected to it. One of these wires is the ignition wire.
1. Get to the starter and see that no wires are touching.
2. Check any and all fuses/relays.
3. If it's ticking, the starter (or solenoid) may be froze up.
4. Turn the key to the on position. With a small hammer (or tool) tap on the starter and then try starting again. If the starter is froze up (temporarily) the start may be getting to hot. This is usually caused by faulty wiring, in most cases a bad connection on a ground, or at the coil wire connection point(s).
5. Check all wiring and see that no wires are frayed, touching or melted. A melted wire could be the cause of a blown fuse, or two or more wires touching or mis-placed (wired wrong).
Also, make sure that the ground wire on the battery is secure at both ends, as well as the positive (which should go to the starter (the largest one). No other wires should to the to positive on the starter with the exception of the iginition wire, however these usually go on thier own threaded bolt on the starter.
If it continues to "tick" while trying to start and you are confident that all the wiring and connections are secure and as they should be, then you may need to replace the solenoid and/or starter.

The rapid ticking sounds as if it may be the starter solenoid. You have mentioned that the ticking is less now, I expect this may be from the battery slowly using its charge. Is it possible for you to place a wire across the starter solenoid to see if you can bye-pass it? If your able to and it turns over then you have determined that it was/is the solenoid. I must agree with your note about sounding like a car; often when a solenoid is failing or the battery has alow charge (confirk your new battery does have a proper charge) the solenoid will tend just to click.
