My 2003 L200 saturn is knocking really loud and it died on me at a stoplight.I just found out it was 4 qts low on oil and the light never came.It also smells like gas and it hesitates to start
Does it knock when you run the engine now? If so Sounds like new engine time. Loud knocking like a hammer banging on cook pan is could be a rod bearing gave out. My advice is check around and avoid the chain auto repairers. Find a good local ASE certified auto mechanic and check the better business bureau.
You might have destroyed the engine. Id have someone look at it to determine if it's salvagable. A compression test may help, but if your bearings are worn out, your oil pressure will be low.
