My 2003 mercury grand marquis has what I describe as lifter chatter for about the first three seconds after starting. Should I move up in oil weight? or take to shop?
Only does this when first starting in morning. Warm days and more so cold days if sits like eight hours or so.

This is normal for vehicle this age we own a 04 grand marquis and have had three other vehicles with 4.6 engine and all of them do this with mileage and age i would recommend a good brand name oil and oil change every three thousand mi only thing that may help some is an oil additive called moa that is made by bg also run a motorcraft oil filter FL 820s
