My 97 lumina stopped running. The mech.said a anti-theft circuit for the airbag has been compromised somehow, and a special tool is needed to remove a nut, which he said only a dealer has. Will this prevent vehicle from starting and running? You can turn ignition on and hit the starter nuts with screwdriver, but car only runs for 3-4 seconds. The mech. is $70 hr,and it's racking up quick. What is the solution?
HAVE VECHICLE SCANNED FOR THEFT SECURITY CODE.PROBLEM COULD BE WORN IGNITION OR KEYS THE THE THEFT DETTERRENT MODULE BAD CHECK FOR FAULTY NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH SEE IF BACK UP LIGHTS WORK.IF NOT NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH BAD ALSO LOOK FOR FAULTY THEFT DETTERRENT RELAY.
Good Evening, I am sorry to hear you are having problems with the anti-theft system in your car. I have had a number of those apart and have not quite ran into any special nuts, no more than the average ones behind the wheel. There are a few things to try first. A. try starting the car, then when it runs for 3-4 seconds and dies leave the key forward in the on position for 5-11 minutes until your security light goes out. It could be as simple as that and when it does turn it off and start the car. Unfortunately sometimes it is not that easy. There are contacts in that ignition cylinder that read off of that key a certain resistance that simply wear out. And underneath your steering column is a orange wire that runs by itself not with the others not round more flat than anything and has 2 little wires in it. Try the first part and if that does not work we can move to step 2. Try step one for 2-3 times just in case to be sure. Anything else please let me know.
