Hi, This happens when there is a process still trying to work in the back end. Try to disable most of the applications which get opened by default when windows starts. Click on start/run/ and type msconfig. Once the window comes up click on start up tab and disable all. Now try to reboot the system. Also hope there is no usb device connected at the time of shut down. This would also make xp hang. Thanks
