1) Make sure the battery is plugged in to the jack in the handset. Sometimes the battery will be in the handset, but not plugged in. 2) Uniden quit making cordless phones a while back so even though you just purchased it, chances are the phone was manufactured several years go and the battery(ies) are dead, they are designed to last about a year. You can buy a new battery on ebay pretty cheap, or if you want one right away, most electronics stores will have them.
