How many miles are on the car ?after some investigating i found the cavalier is noted for timing chain problems on the 2.2 ecotec at about 100,000 ...it will idle rough, stall, problem starting usually you will hear a clicking or rattling noise just before this all happens ..if you find this is your problem you will want to replace the waterpump to as it is run with the chain..i just went through this ..hope this helps

Sounds like it's not getting gas to the engine. i'm trusting there is gas in the tank. you are probably right about the pump.
