My clutch does not seem to completly disengage
I have an 88 wrangler with the peugeot ba10 tranny. My clutch does not seem to completly disengage. Just had it replaced. It seems a little soft also.It looks like i have some play in the master cylinder, when you step on the pedal the piston goes in about 1/4 to 1/2 inch before hitting any resistance. Is this normal? I could not shift into first or second gear without it grinding and my mechanic thought the new clutch would solve the problem because he thought it was not disengaging. Since he put in the new clutch I can shift into gear ok if I push in the clutch and wait about 3 seconds before shifting. Now he thinks the syncro's are gone and wants to rebuild the tranny. Since the clutch job helped a little bit, how would that of helped if the syncro's were bad? I just bought this jeep in this condition so don"t have any history of how it was working before hand. Would appreaciate any advice. Thanks Rob

I think the clutch hydraulic cylinder or.lines have air in them, just like a brake master gets air and the brake pedal seems soft and has play, 1st have the clutch master and slave cylinder down on the tranny checked for any signs of leakage, if no leak is seen then have the clutch pressure bled by a shop, trying to do this without a pressure bleeder is a waste of time so pay to get that done. All the symptoms you have reported the problem is air in the hydraulic clutch. This job should have been done by the shop that did the clutch work, it is a normal part of the repair to verify correct operation.
Like I said Try changing the fluid in the trans and adding one ounce of friction modifier, which is avail at any parts store for about $6. if that doesn't improve the shifting the transmission will need to be rebuilt, not a job for a home tech, need special tools and a good background in trans repair, it is a difficult job.

Right the clutch will feel soft as its new ,this is normal and how it should be .but the not going into gear is a related problem ,either the clutch retaining bolts are not tight enough ,or the bell housing is a fraction loose and moving backwards when clutch is depressed or moving on one side ??? or if all these related faults check out ok then just renew the master cylinder .Another problem could be the crankshaft thrust bearings and the crank journals are worn so the crank is moving towards the front of the engine when the clutch is depressed ,check the front pulley for movement with assistant pushing clutch down .favoutite trick of mine with an old vehicle like this and thats to put a spacer or something in the slave cylinder so pushes out a bit more
my favourite trick is put a nut under the operating piston shaft on the end of the slave cylinder ,gives it a bit more push ,idle should be about 800 too fast and its problem ,but check the bell housing bolts first
