My Creative Zen MX was exposed to water when my water bottle leaked in my bag. I was able to drain the visible liquid from the screen and I put it in a desiccator with silica gel desiccant. How long should I dry it out before I try to turn it on?

I'd wait for at least a day, (not including the night part), Most times when I've immersed my phone, or PDA, I've found that around 12 hours is enough time to soak out the watter.
Often, no harm comes from trying the power, it's just disfunctional, (it may not turn back off for instance), the safe thing is to wait.
Also, another good absorbant medium is Rice, to burry your device in a bowl of rice will draw out the water.
If it is possible to remove the battery, do so as quickly as possible. Try to take off as many removable panels as you can find and let it sit for a week.

Good luck with that.
