Search www.microsoft.com for kb888111. That is a universal HD digital audio sound driver update package. Then reinstall the HP sound driver. Enjoy your music!
Your video card may not be displaying the optimal resolution for your monitor. For most flat panel LCD monitors, you'll want the screen refresh rate set to 60hz. CRT (tube, older style) monitors can display several other refresh rates. You can get to this screen by following this:
- Click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.
- Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.
- Click the Monitor tab, and then click the screen refresh rate that you want to use.
- The default refresh rate setting is 60 Hertz (HZ); however, your monitor may support a higher setting. Check your manufacturer's documentation for information about the settings that your monitor supports.
- If you use a higher refresh rate, you can reduce the rate that your screen flickers; however, if you specify a refresh rate that is too high for your monitor, your screen may become unusable and your hardware may be damaged.
- Changes to the refresh rate affect all users that log on to the computer.

Alternatively, right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
NOTE:
Using Windows XP....If all was installed correctly and the proper devices and drivers were loaded you should have been able to select your speaker type from the control panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Volume/Advanced/Speaker Setup. But if you lost your drives for Audio devices then....
Have your driver disk/CD ready
First make sure the device is enabled on your computers BIOS. If it is then when the OS finishes loading right mouse click on MyComputer. Highlight Manage and left mouse click. Highlight Device Manager and left mouse click. Look under Sound, Video and Game controllers. Remove everything and restart computer. . You should see the install new hardware wizard when the OS starts.
