My drive was working fine then suddenly one day when I plugged in it wont work. No sign of rotation or nothing. But when I put my ear near the drive, I hear a faint beep sound. I used Y cable too. But it does not solve the problem. The drive does not show up in my computer. But when I go to USB controllers, It shows up as USB mass storage device. Please help as how to make the drive to be recognized
Computers & Internet - Maxtor - OneTouch 4 Mini 160GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive
The computer will recognise the interface board that is inside your hard drive case. That is why it recognises the Mass Storage. However, it sounds like the power element of that board, feeding the hard drive, has failed, hence the beep and failure of the drive to run up. If you have a warranty you have a choice:
1. Take to the store and replace, but you will not get back the data. 2. Take the drive to a computer store that deals in data recovery, which will cost you, enabling you to get back what is on the drive. This will then enable you to reclaim a warranty recovery on the drive.
If you have no warranty, then I suggest that you carefully open the case and disconnect the hard drive from the internal board. You can then purchase the relevant USB to hard drive cable, for very little money, which will enable you to access you files. Alternatively you can purchase another hard drive caddy to replace the original housing, These are cheap and found at any computer store or Amazon etc
