Sounds like something shorted to ground..or some grounding issues... unplug dryer and pull back cover off...look for something that might have arc.. behind cover plate..
There is obviously a potentially serious safety issue and you should switch off and disconnect it from the mains and have it checked by an expert.
If your home is equipped with a modern consumer unit the RCD should have tripped. Perhaps you have no RCD or perhaps there is a fault with your house wiring. Good idea to ask the expert to check this when he visits to check the dryer.
