Televison & Video - Sanyo - DVW-6100 DVD Player/VCR
This is more than likely because you are using video out sockets that are exclusively for the use of the DVD player - I suspect you are using COMPONENT connections, i.e. 3 RCA type video cables with 2 additional RCA type audio cables. These are only suitable for a digital video signal such as from a DVD. A VCR is an analog video device and cannot send it's output via component video cables.
The audio out sockets are shared and will work for both DVD and VCR. This is why you have audio but no video.
To get video from the VCR you will need to connect the player to the TV with a different cable, e.g. COMPOSITE (RCA type yellow/red/white). You can keep the component cable connected just for the DVD as it will give better quality video from the DVD but you will need to switch inputs on the TV when switching from DVD to VCR.
I'm just looking for a diagram of the connections on the back of your DVD/VCR and I will post back shortly with a comprehensive answer for you. In the meantime, if you could let me know how your player is connected to your TV, it will assist me greatly in solving your problem.
I found a socket diagram for the DVW-7100 which is more or less identical to your player. This confirms what I told you in my previous message. I have included some diagrams to explain this more clearly. I have highlighted "sets" of sockets rather than individual ones as they work in sets. Please note colors are arbitrary and are used simply for highlightling purposes - they do not have any relation to the color coding on the actual sockets or the plugs on the cables.
I suspect you are currently using one of the following setups (most likely the first one):
Both of the above setups above use COMPONENT video cables - 3 RCA type for video with 2 additional RCA Type (red/white) for audio. You will notice that in both of these setups, the video sockets marked "Pr" "Pb" and "Y" fall in the column marked "DVD EXCLUSIVE OUT". This means they cannot be used for playback from the VCR.
The first setup I've drawn will give you video from the DVD and audio from both DVD and VCR. The second setup will give audio and video from the DVD but nothing from the VCR. It's possible that would get audio from the VCR with the second setup, but it's unlikely. For this reason, I'm sure that your current setup will match the first diagram.
These are the setups that will work:
Option 1
This setup uses one "COMPOSITE" RCA type cable (red/white/yellow). You will notice this column is headed "DVD/VCR OUT". This will give you audio and video from both the DVD and VCR and you will be able to watch either using from same "input/source" selection on your TV. However, the video quality when playing back DVDs will be reduced when in comparison to option 2 below.
Option 2
This setup uses one "COMPOSITE" RCA type cable (red/white/yellow) and one "COMPONENT" RCA type video cable (red/green/blue). With this setup the audio out sockets used in option 1 are shared by the DVD and VCR. You do not need to connect a separate audio cable to the audio out sockets on the extreme right of the diagram.
This setup will give you playback from the DVD and VCR using the same "input/source" on your TV. HOWEVER, if you switch to the COMPONENT input (the one you currently use) on your TV when playing back from DVD you will get improved quality video.
Effectively, I think all you need to do is connect a single RCA type video cable (yellow plug) to the VIDEO OUT socket in the red column above and connect it to the corresponding VIDEO IN socket on your TV.
Reagardless of which setup you use, you need to make sure that all of the outputs from the VCR are attached to the corresponding inputs on the TV.
I hope I haven't made this too complicated as it's actually very simple. If you need any further explanation or assistance please let me know. Similarly, if you are unsure how/where to connect the cables on the back of your TV, please let me know your TV model number and I can draw you a complete setup diagram if required.
