My engine indicator just came on my dash. according to manual, this is most likely due to an emissions control sensor? Any suggestions on how i find the root cause?
Yes the best thing to do is go to auto zone they will scan the computer for the code that tells you what sensor it is causing the light to come on. let me know if you have any ,more question thank you for using fixya.com
yes the most common cause for this is filling up the gas tank with the engine running and the next most common is a bad gas cap seal. replace the gas cap and clear the code.

You can take it to an auto-zone and have them plug in the ODB II. get the code and this will point you in the right direction, once you get the code feel free to chat with me and i can help you more, at this point it could be anything
first things first no you can not clear the code with a reader, you would have to have a tool liek the a Snap-on modis that i use to clear the codes. some of the readers have a code clearing option check the tool to be sure, if you have a leak detected in the evap systme you would have to do what is called a smoke test this involves a smoke machine that filles the tank and pushes it through the evap system and shows you leaks that are present, at this point i would take it to a shop and have this checked, this should not be more than an hour charge for this type of test, if there is no leak found then you have a evap valve or VCS valve sticking open... and possibly a bad charcol canister. repost anything else you find. i will check back later on...first things first no you can not clear the code with a reader, you would have to have a tool liek the a Snap-on modis that i use to clear the codes. some of the readers have a code clearing option check the tool to be sure, if you have a leak detected in the evap systme you would have to do what is called a smoke test this involves a smoke machine that filles the tank and pushes it through the evap system and shows you leaks that are present, at this point i would take it to a shop and have this checked, this should not be more than an hour charge for this type of test, if there is no leak found then you have a evap valve or VCS valve sticking open... and possibly a bad charcol canister. repost anything else you find. i will check back later on...
