Your external hard drive might be faulty, anx if that is the case it might be hard for you too recover anything from it. I suggest you take it to the manufacturer's company or perhaps a local technician
It all depends how comfortable you feel taking things apart. In external drives usually controller fails before drive. If that is the case, take housing apart, remove drive (depends on age it could be sata or ide type) and insert that drive in external docking station. If drive is ok and wasnt encrypted then you should be able to access your data.

Without detecting your external hard drive you will find it hard to do anything with it!
I would suggest taking it to your local computer shop who will be able to recover all your data for you.
