My Flip Video Ultra (out of warranty) has a six minute video of my grandson's piano recital that I would like to retrieve from the camera. However, on my PC laptop running XP and the Dell Desktop, when it is plugged in there is a message that says a USB device has malfunctioned and cannot be recognized (or words to that effect). The camera itself says "connected" and I can see the video on it OK. I tried replacing batteries, upgrading software, and reconnecting multiple times. The camcorder drive is also not recognized on my Mac. Is there any way to retrieve the video if the camera cannot be fixed?

The question is if the flash memory of you camera is defective or if the filesystem is just corrupted. You can atttempt using software like photorec, to read from a defective file system. There are also third party servicesthat can fix common issues on Flip VideoCameras and recover target="_blank"> Flip Video Repair
If you plugin other usb device, does the computer recognizes it? With your xp computer, plugin your Flip and turn it on. Try to right click your windows start button and choose Explore. Then from the left panel, look for the drive letter associated with your Flip. If you're lucky, upon clicking on that drive, it will show its contents to the right.
If the above did not work, then we may need to format your Flip and try to recover the video using a recovery software later.
