My freelander 2002 auto transmission sometimes slip and bang in and out of gears, does it seem to be computer type fault or a mechanical fault? How much will it cost to repair?

I would check teh trans fluid level first ,start engine ,handbrake on and chock drive wheels all four of them then put in reverse and check the fluid level ,if low top up with ATF dextron transmission oil
I would advise not filling up your trans with just regular ATF. The transmission in our Freelanders is made by JATCO and requires a specialized fluid (which is unfortunately very expensive and difficult to find anywhere except for the dealer). The ATF may work fine at first, but the transmission was not designed to use regular ATF dextron and you may run into bigger problems later on.I would advise not filling up your trans with just regular ATF.
