My gps72 just started going off and a thin vertical line appears on the screen. the onl way I can get to come back on is to remove one of the batteries and then it will turn on again and the problem starts over

You need to update the software version to 2.50. You will need a data cable that connects to a serial port on a computer. Be sure to have fresh batteries in the unit and set it to simulator mode when you turn it on and then update. The update is on garmins website.
