First of all, is she sure she HAS a mic? Most laptops include a mic, but not all of them...
Assuming that she DOES have a mic:
First, be sure your speakers are working.
Once that's done:
Right click on the volume controls on the bottom right corner of your screen (image of a speaker) - Choose Playback Devices - Choose Recording Devices - Click Microphone, then Properties - Check the Device usage - If it's disabled, just change it to enabled.
NOT the problem?
Stay on that screen.
Click on Levels. Maybe your mic levels are turned down.
One of those SHOULD work. Or, at least, I hope they do. That was how I fixed MY problem...
If that didn't help you, I'm sorry, but at least I tried. ;o)
