Windows is probably constantly trying to create virtual memory using the hard drive's free space. Buy more RAM and/or create a larger virtual memory file. If it's Windows XP, try right-clicking on My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Performance, Advanced again, Change (under Virtual Memory), increase the Initial Size to AT LEAST what is "recommended" lower down on that screen but no more than 1 1/2 times the actual physical RAM, then click Set.
