My headset microphone isnt working? i record a test message and do not hear the playback sound. should there be software on my computer to correspond to the headset?

There should be basic Operating System sound controls or proprietary software if you have a sound card. They would control mic, headphone and speaker settings among other things. It varies with the O/S. On Windows, start looking in Control Panel.
