My Hitach hard drive has stopped working and had to be replaced in my 4 year old Acer laptop. It was making a noise like a loud clock ticking. I have all my family photos on this drive is it possible to get it repaired or the data transfered . I look forward top your reply. Thank you Philip Stephens
The data recovery is best left to a data recovery company that specializes in this.
What I would FIRST try however is to get an external USB disk carrier and put your disk in that and try to read the data from it. The carriers are usually around $20.
The clicking is when the disk is trying to calibrate the head servo and is unsuccessful and does retries.
If the disc acts the same in the external carrier, try first putting it in the freezer and then quickly try reading... if that doesn't wok, gently warm the unit with a hair drier and try it... if neither work, take it to a data recovery specialist.
